Early in life, Derek had to choose between two career paths: international spy, or film director. His aversion to the whole “murder” thing made the decision fairly simple. Now that's he's an adult, he enjoys making pretend about life-threatening situations. He doesn't enjoy writing about himself in the 3rd person, but apparently that's the format for Bio's.
After working for a number of years as a professional Cinematographer, he is comfortable shooting and directing. His commercial directing work has won 3 Regional Emmys, a National and Gold Addy, as well as D&AD First.
He is drawn to create imagery that elicits an emotional response, and stories that get the heart racing and adrenaline pumping. He strives to make audiences laugh out loud and sit on the edge of their seat. He believes in the medium of motion pictures to affect positive change in society. He loves being part of projects that inspire humans to try harder, to be more mindful of others, more caring, more inclusive, more supportive, more hopeful.
